RIGA, Aug 26 – RIA Novosti. The Latvian television is not going to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Moscow in 2009, as reported to the RIA Novosti in the press service of the Latvian Television (LTV).
A number of Latvian media has reported that Latvian television is willing to support Estonian colleagues in boycotting the Eurovision-2009.
“The Latvian television categorically denies the rumours that LTV may boycott the contest in the coming year. This is an interpretation of journalists,” – said Arnis Kuprish, vice-director of LTV.
Because of the military conflict in South Ossetia, Estonians were considering boycotting the international song contest in Moscow. Chairman of the Estonian National Broadcasting Corporation Margus Allikmaa said that the issue of boycotting of the competition should be discussed publicly. He invited the audience, authors, performers, producers and all who are interested to express their views on the issue.
The Ministry of Culture of Estonia supported the idea. It also stressed the need to communicate with the colleagues from Lithuania and Latvia, and to encourage them to similar action.
According to the above article from RIA Novosti, Latvia is doubtfully willing to worsen the already bad relations with Russia. But whether the recent events would aid in the deterioration of their relations remains unknown.
